1 气候 落絮游丝三月候，风吹雨洗一城花。今日谷雨。

谷雨时节，既是春之最盛，亦是夏的前奏。谷雨则有此三候：一候萍始生；二候鸣鸠拂其羽；三候戴胜降于桑。谷雨后雨量增多，河湖里的浮萍开始生长，布谷鸟鸣叫着提醒着人们要忙着播种，降落在桑树上觅食的戴胜鸟频频出现，春光一派大好。

The Grain Rain is both the climax of spring and the prelude to summer. There are three phases of the Grain Rain. In the first phase, duckweed begins to grow; in the second phase, turtle doves fly; in the third phase, hoopoe lands on the mulberry trees. After the Grain Rain, rainfall increases, and the duckweed in the rivers and lakes begins to grow. The cuckoos chirp to remind people to sow. The hoopoe, landing on the mulberry trees to forage, appears frequently, how beautiful the spring scenery is!

2 农事 “春雨贵如油”“雨生百谷”，谷雨时节的降水，对农作物生长极为重要。

谷雨农谚有强调农时的，如“清明高粱接种谷，谷雨棉花再种薯”；有劝农桑的，如“谷雨到立夏，就把小苗挖”；有提醒加强田间管理的，如“棉花播下就锄地，增温保墒地通气”等。

Farming

“Spring rain is as precious as oil”. “Rain brings up all grains”. Rain during the Grain Rain is extremely important for the growth of crops.

Among the agricultural proverbs related to the Grain Rain, some emphasize the farming season, such as “the Pure Brightness is suitable to plant sorghum and paddy, while the Grain Rain is cotton and potato”; some highlight the agricultural activities, for example, “during the period from the Grain Rain to the Beginning of Summer, people need fill and thin seedlings; some remind the field management, for instance, “hoe the land after sowing cotton, raise the temperature and increase soil moisture to promote the growth of crops”.

3 习俗 观牡丹、品春茶是谷雨时节的重要民俗活动。谷雨品尝新茶，相沿成习。山东茶区露天春茶上市时间基本在谷雨前后，日照绿茶、崂山绿茶、泰山茶等已成为市场知名度较高的地方名茶。

山东各地有谷雨食香椿的习俗，“雨前香椿嫩如丝”。其实，香椿最初只是充饥的野菜，后来人们发现它好种又好吃，便开始广泛种植。张贴谷雨帖，或用朱砂书禁蝎符咒等，皆寓驱凶纳吉、丰收平安之盼。

Custom

Admiring peonies and tasting spring tea are important folk activities during the Grain Rain. Drinking fresh tea on the Grain Rain has gradually evolved into a tradition. Open-air spring tea in Shandong is basically marketed around the Grain Rain. Rizhao green tea, Laoshan green tea and Taishan tea have become well-known local teas.

There is a custom in Shandong to eat Chinese toon during the Grain Rain, “Chinese toon before the Grain Rain is as tender as silk”. Chinese toon was originally just a wild vegetable to satisfy hunger, but later people found it is easy to plant and delicious, then it began to be widely planted. Posting the Grain Rain picture and writing charms with cinnabar both contain the hope of driving away bad luck, receiving good fortune, bringing a bumper harvest and keeping healthy.
